“The quality of olive oil is born in the field”. “Quantity is not incompatible with quality”. “The olive has its own potential and all you can do is stay out of the way”. These are well known and certainly true sayings but…do we completely understand what they imply?
A suitable environment, accurately selected varieties and all the cultural practices that ensure production of well-developed and healthy fruit will certainly provide the opportunity to produce oil of the highest quality in commercial quantities. Boundary Bend has embraced these principles from the beginning and through detailed research and professional management has been leading the olive oil production in the Southern Hemisphere.
The quality of the oil already exists in the olive fruit and the subsequent acts of harvesting, transport, processing, storage of oil and bottling of the oil must be focused in preserving the quality of the oil. Our state of the art harvesting, processing and storage equipment has been specifically designed to maintain that freshness from the tree to the bottle.
Variety
Developing our groves, Boundary Bend makes use of our extensive research work to select the most suitable varieties for our locations, guaranteeing a desirable range of olive oil styles and maximising the genetic potential of each cultivar.
Irrigation
The main objective of irrigation is to provide additional water in order to avoid stressing conditions for the tree. If the tree is not stressed by lack of moisture it will be able to maintain its level of photosynthesis and oil accumulation. Fully irrigated groves provide the opportunity for maximum vegetative growth and consequently the potential for maximum yields.
Boundary Bend's experienced irrigation management during the oil accumulation period and in the weeks prior to harvesting is one of the keys to our success. Different to most dry land growing areas around the world, we are able to improve the character of the oil and the extraction process, maintaining consistent aromatic profiles and levels of antioxidants suitable for each variety and olive oil style.
Harvest
Harvesting the fruit from the olive tree is one of the critical issues in the quest for the production of quality olive oil. In order to achieve quality and efficiency during harvesting, there are two main aspects to be considered simultaneously: Appropriate harvesting systems and optimal time of harvesting the fruit. Boundary Bend state of the art Near Infra Red equipment and years of research help us to determine optimal harvest time for each variety and each local environment every year. The selection of varieties with different optimal harvesting periods in our groves together with our hands on involvement in developing unique continuous harvesters are the two most important aspects that guarantee a successful and timely harvest that preserves all the attributes of our olives.
